Founder of Art Deco Montreal and author of Northern Deco
Le 9e, founded in 1931, is situated on the ninth floor of the former Eaton's department store in downtown Montreal. It is regarded as one of the world's most notable Art Deco interiors. In 1999, Quebec's Ministry of Culture designated the restaurant as a heritage site, protecting its historic interior.
The restaurant was designed by noted French architect Jacques Carlu, renowned for the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Its design was inspired by Lady Flora Eaton's voyage in the 1920s aboard the French Line's most beautiful ship, the Ile de France.
Le 9e is modelled after the first-class dining room of that ship. Le 9e opened in 1931 and quickly became a landmark dining and social destination in Montreal. The space reflected Streamline Moderne influences, featuring curved forms, 30-foot frescoes painted by Natasha Carlu, bas-reliefs, and furnishings that evoked the grandeur of early 20th-century travel. It also hosted fashion shows and cultural events for 70 years.
Le 9e closed in 1999 and remained shut for 25 years. Following extensive restoration, Le 9e reopened in 2024.
Today, it once again serves as a space for everyday elegance and cultural events while preserving its original design, offering Montrealers and visitors the chance to dine in one of the world's finest Art Deco interiors.
Dining at Le 9e's restaurant - Ile de France is led by Executive Chef Liam Hopkins and Culinary Director Derek Dammann, Le French Line bar is led by Le 9e beverage director Andrew Whibley, and Café Le 9e is led by Dominique Jacques.
The space features the historic Grande Salle as well as the original Gold and Silver private dining rooms, making it an ideal setting for galas, private events, concerts and a variety of cultural gatherings.
Experience the magic of the Grande Salle at Le 9e, featuring live concerts by the city's top musicians and festive dining events.
