Founded in 1931, Le 9e is located on the ninth floor of the former Eaton’s department store in downtown Montreal. It is considered one of the most remarkable Art Deco interior spaces in the world. In 1999, Quebec’s Ministry of Culture designated it a heritage site, thereby protecting its historic interior.

The restaurant was designed by the famous French architect Jacques Carlu, also known for the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Its layout was inspired by Lady Flora Eaton’s 1920s voyage aboard the Île-de-France, the French Line’s most beautiful ship.

Le 9e is inspired by the ship’s first-class dining room. The restaurant opened its doors in 1931 and quickly became a must-visit dining and social destination in Montreal. The space features Streamline Moderne influences, with its curved forms, 30-foot murals painted by Natasha Carlu, bas-reliefs, and furniture evoking the luxury of early 20th-century travel. It also hosted fashion shows and cultural events for 70 years.

Le 9e closed its doors in 1999, finally reopening 25 years later in 2024 after extensive restoration work.

Today, it once again serves as a space where culture and elegance meet, while having preserved its original design, offering Montrealers and visitors the chance to discover one of the world’s most beautiful Art Deco interiors.

The restaurant at Le 9e, Île de France, is led by Executive Chef Liam Hopkins and Culinary Director Derek Dammann. Le French Line bar is managed by Andrew Whibley, Beverage Director of Le 9e, while Le 9e café is managed by Dominique Jacques.
